Airport Engineers

Not many people think ‘airports’ when considering a career in construction, but everything needs a home. Buses have depots, trains have stations and aeroplanes have airports.  Airports require specialist designs to accommodate facilities for checking in, loading people and cargo, scheduling departures and arrivals, retail and hospitality. Airport designers also focus on how to make airport traffic safer, faster, and more pleasant for everyone.

Airport engineers are professional civil engineers who specialise in preparing designs for airports, hangars and control towers. Their job involves supervising the construction, maintenance and repair of runways taking into consideration factors such as direction, local environmental conditions; weight, size and speed of aircraft, and advising contractors on technical issues during construction.
