Apprentice Spotlight - Mat Sargeant

Mat Sargeant is a first year Carpentry & Joinery Apprentice with ABS Facade. He has been working to install the metal sheeting on the outside of the new Construction Training Fund Careers Centre in Belmont.

How did you get into your apprenticeship?

I saw the apprenticeship advertised online and applied. I was fortunate enough to be successful and am now a few months into my first year.

What are you day to day jobs on site?

Reading plans is a large part of it so it's important to understand all of the measurements and information on a plan. I then install metal sheeting as per the plan.

Why did you decide on a Carpentry & Joinery Apprenticeship?

I started an Engineering Degree but wanted something more hands on. I saw the apprenticeship advertised and decided to go for it!

What is something you didn't know about the construction industry?

I thought carpenters only worked with wood, but I work with metal so it's definately not the case.

What is your 5 year plan?

To get qualified and continue working on commercial sites, I really enjoy the variety and within my first few months I have worked on the Construction Training Fund centre, a school and shopping centre.

What's your favourite thing so far?

I think seeing an end product is really satisfying, it gives me a sense of achievement which is important to me in a career.

Finally, what is your favourite thing to do outside of work?

I love to play AFL!

Thanks Mat!
